The gale of defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that has been going on for the past two months in Edo State continued at the weekend as over 20, 000 members of the ruling party dropped their broom to pick up the umbrella in three local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District.
The affected local government areas are Oredo, Ikpoba Okha and Ovia North East.
The people of Odighi and Odiguete communities in Ovia North East local government area while defecting to the PDP said they were leaving the APC because the party could not protect them from the killing and raping of their women by the Fulani herds men that have taken over their farmlands.
Edo State chairman of PDP Chief Dan Orbih while welcoming them to the party appealed to the electorate to verify if their names appeared in the voters’ register recently released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enable them vote in the 2019 general elections.
Orbih appealled to the defectors said to join hands with other stakeholders to chase out what he redescribed as “this evil government” with their voters cards.
However, Mrs Ehioghae who spoke for the Odighi community while defecting along with hundreds of former APC members at Odiguete known as Uhiere ward 7 said, “our people can no longer go to their farms, our women are being raped our people are being killed because of the activities of herds men.
“We can no longer remain in a party that cannot protect us. The party that brought the herds men must go ”
Also speaking at Odiguete, a legal practitioner, Mr Julius Edobor, said the people of Uhiere Ward have lost faith in the APC, saying that they have been neglected by the party.
In Oredo local government area , a group,.”White Rose for Atiku”, led by Mrs Perpetua Okoye said that they were defecting from the APC because they have derailed from their campaign premises, saying that the PDP remains the only hope for the emancipation of the country.
Addressing the defectors at Ikpoba Okha, Chief Orbih thanked them for abandoning a vehicle where the driver and conductor are fighting. He said APC has proved to the world that they are parading incompetent set of leaders that could not manage party let alone managing a country of over 180 million people.
He said the country was going through a perilous time therefore, “we must take up the challenge of changing this bad government “
